As covid-19 sweeps the country, photographers have had to get creative since most (if not all) of our business comes from in-person contact. What’s one way we’re able to still be creative and capture the moment? FaceTime sessions!

A new trend (not my original idea!) is for photographers to call a client via FaceTime, guide them to pose in certain parts of their home and take “screenshots” as photos.

But as a client, how do you prepare for a session like this, anyway?

I’ve got all the tips for you right in this post!

Tip 1 — It’s all about getting these moments captured.

These photos are less about the amazing quality (they will be low-resolution photos) and more about getting this slower paced at-home life captured. You probably won’t want to print these photos, unless you want some mini prints!

Tip 2 — Prep your iPhone!

Unless you’re really into the “smugged photo look”, you might want to give your front & back facing camera a quick wipe down so there’s no smudges. Make sure that your phone is fully charged, too!

Tip 3 — Have a sense of humor!

The internet might lag or cut in & out. That’s okay. It might feel awkward setting up your phone on random bookshelves or chairs. That’s okay! Laugh it out, it’s all for fun anyway.

Tip 4 — Have a stack of books on hand.

Make sure you have a stack of your favorite books handy, since you might have to set your phone on it. Having a tall candle or coffee mug on hand is great to set your phone on, too.

Tip 5 — Clean up your house a little bit . . . but not too much.

There’s a balance to everything. These photos are meant to capture real life, so don’t feel like you have to make your home spotless. However if you want to pick up the pile of dirty laundry (guilty) in the corner, that’d be fine. Your photographer will most likely want to stick to the areas of your house that have good light, like where windows are.

Tip 6 — It’s all about the experience!

These little sessions are a great chance to laugh a lot and get your mind off the things in the world right now. So grab your pets, your quarantine buddies or your plant babies and have some fun. It’s also a good chance to support your local or favorite photographer, we appreciate the love right now!
