Including your pet in engagement photos: tips

I loveee animals, so it makes my day when couples can bring pets to their engagement photos. Plus it makes for the some of the sweetest and funniest photos!

There are some logistics though that are important to know before you bring your pet along for photos.

Tip 1: Bring another set of hands to help. I always encourage couples to have a friend or family member that they trust come along for the first part of the session so they can take the pup home. That way the couple can focus on each other during photos . . . you don’t want to have to worry about your dog barking in the background, trust me!

It usually only takes me about 15 minutes to get some cute photos of you and your pup together. So you can have whoever is picking your dog up to come along for the first part of the photos!

Tip 2: Interact with your pet together! When we’re taking photos, don’t be afraid to interact and play with your pet. I usually get one photo where you guys are all looking in my direction, after that it’s playful candids.

Tip 3: Opt for an in-home session. If you can’t find someone to pick your pup up, why not start the session in your home? Your pets will be most comfortable at home anyway. This is a good option for cats too, because personally I’d be terrified to bring our cat to a park haha!

Tip 4: Take your pup for a walk first. If you have a dog with a lot of energy, it doesn’t hurt to walk them around the park a bit before starting the session. I know puppies can be especially energetic! Walking them gives them a chance to calm down for photos.

Tip 5: Be patient. Don’t be surprised if your pet acts up a little bit during the session. It’s completely normal. I mean . . . it’s not everyday you get your dog gets their photo taken and they’re probably wondering what the heck is going on! Don’t feel like you have to apologize to me, either if your dog is acting up. I have seen it all and it doesn’t bother me at all!

I hope this post was helpful to you and encouraged you to bring your pet along for photos. If you have any questions at all, feel free to drop a comment below.
