Wedding at Red River Gorge, Kentucky
I really admire both Kelly & Rick for how laid-back and well they handled all the things that “went wrong” when it came to their wedding. Just going to write this in list form to show ya.
Skybridge, their original wedding ceremony spot, caught on fire a week before their wedding. It was closed and so they moved their sunset ceremony to the cabin they were all staying at.
Rick researched different locations and came up with Princess Arch and Chimney Rock. Cool deal. Except the first location, Chimney Rock, was swarming with hundreds wasps. We took like 3 photos and had to leave.
Kentucky went through an almost two month drought before their wedding. Normally late/mid October in Kentucky is when at least some the leaves have turned pretty and the weather cools down. Nope. It was in the 80s and the trees were more of a muted green vs being fall-ish. We found some spots though, you’ll see.
We got stuck on one of the gorge’s famous narrow roads, because a guy in front of us was hauling a trailer and he got stuck. But we made it out safely ha ha (we did lose one of our car’s handles because it got scraped off by the side of the gorge but its okay, we didn’t even realize till we got back home).
Sunset pics got changed to mid-afternoon harsh light pics. I actually liked the challenge of this. I used to do everything I could to avoid shooting couple’s portraits in harsh light. We embraced it for this shoot and worked with it.
See what I mean now about Rick and Kelly being chill? They handled it like champs. It was still such a good day and we enjoyed the adventuring. Shooting a wedding at the gorge has been on my bucket list since I was 17! So I was excited to say the least.
Their wedding reminded me a lot of our wedding too. At a cabin in the woods, not much cell service, surrounded by twenty family members. The good stuff. (: Thanks Kelly and Rick for letting us capture your day, it was a good one!
